We recently completed a major solar and storage installation at Stanford-in-the-Vale Village Hall, transforming it into a true community energy hub.

This 72-panel, battery-backed system cuts carbon and lowers bills, but it also does something more: it establishes the hall as an SOS Point, a designated safe space where local residents can gather during emergencies or prolonged power outages, with power security provided by the solar and storage system.

What does this mean in practice?

The system is estimated to generate between 2,800 and 3,200 kWh per month, or 34,000 to 38,000 kWh per year. For a busy village hall, that represents a significant reduction in grid reliance and a substantial cut to running costs, freeing up funds for the community rather than energy bills.

This project is a good example of how solar is not only an environmental decision, but a practical one. In a rural area, having a building that can operate independently of the grid during an outage provides real reassurance for the community it serves.

Community and charitable projects are zero-rated for VAT on solar installations, and there are a range of grants and funding options available that can make the upfront cost more manageable. As with Charlbury Community Centre and other community projects we have completed in the area, it is worth exploring what funding may be available before you start.

It’s official – winter is on the way! With the kids heading back to school and the evenings drawing in, it seems only right that thoughts turn to the shift in seasons, and preparing for the long winter ahead.

For many families, the biggest concern is keeping their home warm without spiralling costs. Energy prices have soared to unprecedented highs in recent years – the Russian invasion of Ukraine alone pushed bills by a record 54% in April 2022. And while the UK government’s Energy Price Guarantee offered some relief, prices remain well above pre-pandemic levels. In fact, Ofgem announced just last week that bills will rise again, with a further 2% increase on the energy price cap.

So, how can you hope to heat your home for less, when the prices are higher than ever? We share our 5 top tips below.

Kidlington Draught Busters

Since 2024, Anthony and Bob, two volunteers from Kidlington Draught Busters have been visiting homes in the local area to help seal up draughts. This free service is facilitated by Kidlington Parish Council, and funded by Cherwell District Council and the Low Carbon Hub. Visit their website to find out more and book your visit >

Loft and cavity wall insulation

A poorly insulated home can lose a significant amount of heat – research from Wealden District Council suggests this could be up to 35% through the walls, 25% through the roof and 15% as a result of draughts. Installing roof and/or cavity wall insulation can help to keep some of that heat where you want it – in your home! The UK government recently set up the Great British Insulation Scheme, designed to support homeowners with investing in their properties. Before going ahead, be sure to check your eligibility to the scheme, and the relevant qualifications and certifications of the businesses completing the work. Visit the government website to find out more >

Solar panels

Thought solar panels were just for the summer? We are here to tell you that’s a myth! While they certainly do operate at peak efficiency during the summer, as long as there is daylight, they are able to generate free solar energy. Solar panel technology is cheaper and more effective than ever, making it the perfect time to invest, with some homes seeing a return on their investment within as little as five years. Pop in your postcode to receive an instant, no-obligation quote.

Maintenance

Installing solar panels is one thing but ensuring regular maintenance is key to protecting your investment. Booking an annual health check and clean can ensure your system continues work effectively, and can boost the amount of power your panels generate. In high pollution areas, this can be by up to 25%. Please reach out to our team to book your visit.

Install a battery

No solar? No problem! Increasingly, we are seeing homeowners looking to install a battery, without investing in solar panels. This kind of set-up allows you to charge your battery at a time that is cheapest on your individual energy tariff (for example, overnight) and then make use of that cheaper electricity during the day. The return on this kind of investment will be slower than something like solar, but it can be a good option, if you’ve recently invested in an electric vehicle.

Ready to get started?

Regardless of your budget, it’s likely you’ll be able to do more for less this winter. The UK government, mortgage providers and energy companies are under increasing pressure to help people make their homes more energy efficient, meaning there are a lot of grants and schemes available to take advantage of.

While installing a solar PV system and being able to generate free electricity is certainly very appealing, we know that the upfront cost of installation can be a barrier for some homeowners. Fortunately, there are several financial support options available, from government grants,to subsidies and green mortgages, which are designed to make solar power more accessible than ever.

We understand that navigating these financial options can be overwhelming, and while we can not advise on the best type of funding to apply for, we will be sharing some of the options in this short blog. Before making any decisions, please ensure you take the time to review the information provided carefully, and understand what the long-term implications of any agreement might be.

Government Grants and Incentives

The UK government periodically offers incentives to support the adoption of renewable energy. While the Green Homes Grant scheme has ended, there are still options available.

ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation): This scheme requires major energy suppliers to help eligible homeowners improve energy efficiency, including solar panel installations, under certain conditions.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): Instead of an upfront grant, the SEG ensures you get paid for surplus energy your system generates and exports back to the grid. While this doesn’t reduce installation costs directly, it helps improve the long-term return on investment. You can find out more about the SEG in our short blog, or by contacting your energy supplier.

Subsidies from Energy Companies

Energy suppliers are playing a significant role in promoting renewable energy adoption. As an Octopus Trusted Partner, we are proud to work alongside the energy company offering highly competitive export rates under the SEG, ensuring homeowners receive a fair return for their surplus solar energy.

Green Mortgages and Financing Options

We’ve been hearing a lot recently about green mortgages, which are allowing homeowners to borrow at preferential rates for energy-efficient home improvements, including solar panel installations.

Green mortgages offer lower rates or additional borrowing to homeowners who improve their home’s energy efficiency.

This includes cheaper rates for energy-efficient homes, funds for energy upgrades, and more borrowing for energy improvements.

By encouraging homeowners to reduce their carbon footprint, green mortgages help make homes more energy-efficient – saving money on energy bills while also increasing property value.

Some mortgage providers, such as Barclays, offer a cash-back scheme for customers that have renewable energy products installed by TrustMark or MCS certified installers. Please ensure you check with your mortgage provider and with your installer to ensure you are eligible to participate in the scheme.

Homes with better EPC ratings (energy performance certificates) can qualify for higher loan amounts, since lower energy bills free up more money for mortgage payments.

Green mortgages are relatively new in the UK housing market, but several major banks and lenders already offer green finance products, including Barclays, Nationwide Building Society, NatWest, Halifax, and Santander. If you’re interested, it’s worth asking your bank or building society about green mortgage options.

Making Solar More Affordable

Investing in solar energy is a smart financial decision, and with the right funding support, it’s more accessible than ever. Whether you’re looking to benefit from subsidies, explore a green mortgage, or simply want expert advice, Lumos PV is here to help. As a local, trusted solar installer and an Octopus Energy partner, we’re committed to making your transition to solar as smooth and cost-effective as possible.

The UK government has committed to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. This target involves reducing greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible, and offsetting any remaining emissions to reach a “net zero” balance.

While this will mean transformative change for businesses and agriculture, what does it mean for homeowners? In this short blog, we’ll look into how the UK’s pledge affects you, and why investing in solar now could be a smart, future-proof decision.

What is Net Zero and why does it matter?

The Net Zero by 2050 commitment is a legally binding target, meaning the UK government is required to implement policies and initiatives to achieve it. This includes reducing emissions from sectors like energy, transportation, agriculture, and housing. For households, Net Zero means an emphasis on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

As part of the drive, the government is increasing support for renewable energy, such as solar power. Financial incentives, grants, and initiatives like the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) help people contribute to the clean energy transition while potentially earning from the power they generate. Essentially, Net Zero by 2050 is about a shared responsibility to reduce carbon emissions across all levels of society.

Getting involved

The government’s Net Zero target is an ambitious one, and achieving it will require action at every level, including the individual household. Here are some ways you can actively contribute to this goal:

Adopt renewable energy: Investing in renewable energy sources like solar panels is one of the most impactful actions you can take. Solar energy allows you to generate your own power, reducing dependence on the grid and fossil fuels.

Reduce your carbon footprint: Making energy-efficient upgrades to your home, such as improved insulation or energy-efficient appliances, also contributes to the overall reduction in carbon emissions.

Support electric vehicles (EVs): Transitioning to an EV, especially if charged through renewable energy sources, reduces carbon emissions associated with traditional fuel-powered vehicles. Installing solar panels at home can further lower the cost and carbon footprint of charging.

Take advantage of government incentives: The government offers various incentives for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint, including grants for renewable energy installation and home efficiency improvements.

Why now is the time to invest in solar

With the 2050 deadline drawing nearer, there’s a clear momentum building around renewable energy. Investing in solar power now offers several key advantages:

Cost savings on energy bills: Solar energy can provide significant savings on electricity bills by allowing you to generate your own power. As energy costs are expected to rise in the coming years, having solar panels can reduce your reliance on the grid and shield you from price hikes.

Increased property value: Homes equipped with solar energy systems are becoming more desirable, with potential buyers attracted to the prospect of reduced energy bills and a lower carbon footprint.

Future-proofing your energy needs: Solar panels typically last over 25 years, meaning they offer a long-term solution to energy needs. Installing solar now prepares you for potential future requirements, especially as the government continues to move away from fossil fuels and toward green energy.

Benefit from the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): The SEG allows solar panel owners to earn money for surplus energy exported back to the grid, providing additional financial incentive to install solar.

Protect against future price rises

Energy prices in the UK have risen significantly in recent years, and with continued global energy instability, costs are likely to keep increasing. Solar power helps you manage this uncertainty by offering a way to generate electricity independently.

Battery storage systems can further enhance the financial and practical benefits of solar.
Installing a solar energy system to your home or business is a big investment, and with the right care, you’ll be reaping the benefits for 25+ years. Many manufacturers provide warranties and guarantees for their panels and inverters, but there are some other things to consider, to ensure your system continues to generate the most electricity for you.

In this short blog, we’ll cover what to expect post-installation, the warranties that protect the equipment, and the importance of regular maintenance.

Manufacturer warranties and guarantees

The solar panel manufacturers that we work with offer warranties to protect your investment against defects and performance issues. The below is an example of what to expect – we recommend asking one of the team or reviewing the individual product warranties for more specific information.

Product Warranty: Typically lasting 10-25 years, a product warranty covers any defects in the materials or workmanship of the panels. If a panel malfunctions, the manufacturer will replace or repair it within this period.

Performance Warranty: Solar panels degrade over time, but performance warranties guarantee that panels will maintain a certain percentage of their rated output over 25-30 years, usually around 80-85%. This ensures long-term efficiency and provides peace of mind that your system will deliver substantial energy for decades.

Inverter Warranty: Inverters often have shorter warranties (5-12 years) than panels due to their critical and high-demand role in converting DC to AC power. Some manufacturers offer extended warranties, which can be worth considering.

Having a clear understanding of what your warranties cover and their duration allows you to address any issues confidently if they arise.

The Importance of regular maintenance

Keeping your panels clean and free of debris helps maintain their efficiency. While solar panels are generally low-maintenance, regular checks can make a significant difference in performance.

Cleaning Panels: Dirt, dust, bird droppings, and pollen can accumulate on the panels, blocking sunlight and reducing efficiency. Regular cleaning helps ensure optimal energy production. Professional cleaning is recommended, as they use water and methods that won’t scratch the panels or affect the protective coating. We work with a local cleaning company to offer this service to our clients – reach out to the team to find out more information.

Seasonal Considerations: Spring and autumn are ideal times to check for any build-up or seasonal residue on the panels. Regular maintenance also prepares your system for the more intense energy generation in summer.

Proactive system inspections

Regular inspections by a professional can identify and address any potential issues before they escalate.

Electrical Checks: An electrician can verify that all connections and components are in good working condition, ensuring no loose wires or faulty parts compromise your system’s performance or safety.

Bird and Pest Prevention: Birds, squirrels, and other small animals sometimes seek shelter under or around solar panels. They can cause damage to the roof or the wiring beneath the panels. Adding deterrents, like mesh, around the panels can help keep birds and pests from nesting beneath the array.

Roof Inspections: Since solar panels are installed directly onto the roof, regular inspections are an opportunity to check for any minor roof damage and address it before it becomes an issue. Ensuring the roof is stable and damage-free helps prolong the lifespan of both the roof and the solar system.

Tracking system performance

Most modern solar installations come with monitoring systems or apps that allow you to track your energy production in real-time. This provides several advantages:

Identify Performance Drops: A sudden decrease in energy production may indicate an issue with a panel or the inverter. Monitoring helps you catch these signs early, so you can arrange for a professional check.

Optimise Usage: By knowing when your system produces the most energy, you can adjust your energy consumption habits to maximise savings. For example, running high-energy appliances like dishwashers or washing machines during peak solar hours can make the most of your system’s output.

Scheduling annual professional maintenance

Annual or bi-annual professional maintenance is recommended to ensure everything is working as expected. Professional service usually includes:

System cleaning and calibration: Professionals can safely clean panels, check calibrations, and ensure no dirt or residue is blocking sunlight.

Inspecting roof and panels: They’ll examine the structure of your roof and the mounting system, checking for any wear and tear.

Inverter and electrical check-up: A detailed inspection of the inverter and all electrical components to ensure maximum safety and performance.

Having a regular check keeps your system running smoothly and allows you to address small issues before they affect energy production.

Get started

If you have any questions about the type of ongoing maintenance your renewable system might need, or would like to learn more about the warranties for specific products, please make contact with the team.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government initiative designed to incentivise the adoption of renewable energy in residential properties. Households can earn money for surplus energy they generate and export back to the National Grid. For those with solar panel systems, the SEG offers a valuable opportunity to offset the costs of installation and even generate a return on investment over time.

In this guide, we’ll explore what the SEG is, how it works, and how to benefit from it.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee was introduced in January 2020 to replace the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme. The SEG mandates that licensed electricity suppliers in the UK, such as EDF and Octopus Energy, offer payment for surplus electricity generated by small-scale, renewable energy sources like solar panels. For homeowners that generate more energy than they use, you can ‘sell’ your energy back to the grid for general use.

The SEG is part of the UK government’s commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050, promoting renewable energy adoption as a means to reduce the nation’s carbon footprint. By compensating individuals for their renewable contributions, the SEG helps make sustainable energy more financially viable for households.

How does SEG work?

Here’s a simple breakdown of how the SEG operates:

Export surplus energy to the grid: When your system produces more electricity than you need, the surplus is exported to the national grid. Rather than this energy going unused, the SEG allows you to benefit financially from it.

Receive Payment from Your Energy Supplier: Under the SEG, energy suppliers are required to offer tariffs for exported electricity. This means you’ll receive a payment per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for the electricity you export. Payments can vary between suppliers, so it’s a good idea to compare offers to maximise your earnings.

To qualify, your installation must be certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), and you’ll need a smart meter capable of measuring exported electricity.

Is it worth investing in solar?

Alongside the financial incentives of SEG, there has never been a better time to start harnessing the power of the sun:

Financial returns on solar adoption: Earning money from the surplus energy you generate can help cover installation costs over time. While each property and project is individual, SEG can reduce the time to breakeven from 10-15 years, to 7-10, depending on energy production and supplier rates.

Store solar to use another time: Instead of ‘selling’ your surplus power back to the grid, investing in battery storage would allow you to save the energy to use later, such as at night.

Energy independence: Generating and exporting your own power reduces dependence on traditional energy suppliers. As energy costs continue to rise, the ability to generate income from renewable energy provides an extra layer of energy security.

Supporting sustainability goals: The SEG helps households play an active role in the UK’s Net Zero by 2050 target. By exporting excess energy, you can directly contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable national grid.

Is now the right time to invest in solar?

As energy prices rise and the UK pushes towards its Net Zero target, the SEG makes investing in solar panels more attractive than ever. Not only do you save on energy bills, but the payments for surplus electricity give you a way to recoup installation costs over time. And as the demand for renewable energy grows, future tariffs for exported energy could increase, potentially making solar investments even more profitable.

Solar energy also acts as a hedge against rising electricity prices, giving you greater control over energy costs and long-term savings.

How to get started

To take advantage of the scheme, you must ensure your solar installer is MCS-certified. This is a certification we are proud to hold, and by visiting their website, you’ll be able to find a list of suppliers in your area. Next, find an energy supplier offering a favourable SEG tariff, as rates can vary. Most major suppliers provide SEG tariffs, but it’s important to compare offers for the best deal for your needs.

For more detailed information on the scheme, we recommend you visit the UK Government website to explore eligibility criteria and additional guidelines.

Next steps

The Smart Export Guarantee offers a practical incentive for homeowners interested in solar energy, providing a means to offset installation costs and contribute to a sustainable future. By exporting excess power, you can earn income, reduce your payback period, and enjoy the security of energy independence.

To find out how installing solar could help your home, please contact our team >
