How to find a solar PV installer

Solar continues to be one of the most effective ways to cut energy costs, reduce reliance on the grid, and improve the efficiency of homes and commercial buildings. Panels are more advanced and durable than ever. And with government-backed incentives, a rise in green mortgages, and domestic systems remaining VAT free, it has never been more affordable. As we have discussed in previous blogs, many homeowners are pairing solar with batteries and EV charging; many businesses are using solar to stabilise operating costs and meet sustainability targets. Whatever the motivation, it’s time to go green!

But the investment and interest in solar has also attracted less qualified installers. Misleading advertising, claims on social media of “free solar”, and poorly designed systems are all too common. Choosing the right installer is essential, not just for safety and compliance, but also for ensuring your investment delivers the long-term performance you expect.

When assessing installers, start with the credentials that matter.

For green home and renewable energy improvements

For any renewable installation, you should expect to see industry-recognised standards that demonstrate technical competence, responsible trading practices and consumer protection. These include quality marks such as MCS, consumer codes such as RECC and the government-endorsed schemes like TrustMark. Together, they show that the installer is able to design, specify, install and hand over a system that meets renewable energy standards and gives you the protection you need as a customer.

Accreditations for construction, safety and site work

Solar installations also rely on strong construction and electrical practice. Look for evidence that the team on site holds relevant electrical certifications, health and safety accreditations, and construction-industry qualifications. Schemes such as Napit, CHAS, CSCS and Constructionline demonstrate that an installer has robust processes in place, operates safely and is qualified to work in both domestic and commercial environments. These standards matter just as much as the renewable credentials, as they show that the company is equipped to manage risk, comply with regulations and deliver quality workmanship.
